West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has replaced her legal counsel in the case filed against her by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose. Initially, Sanjay Basu was listed as her lawyer in the Calcutta High Court, but on Wednesday, solicitor firm Fox & Mondal informed Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam’s bench that they would now represent the CM. The firm submitted documents requesting the court not to take any action without notifying them. The case involves the Governor’s challenge against Mamata and three others over an oath-taking controversy following the recent assembly by-elections.
The legal dispute began after the Trinamool Congress criticized the delay in the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs Sayantika Banerjee (Baranagar) and Rayat Hossain (Bhagwangola). Governor Bose later filed a case against Mamata, Sayantika, Rayat, and Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. High Court sources confirmed that Raj Bhavan had filed an affidavit in the case about 1.5 weeks ago, but there has been no official statement from the Governor’s office regarding the matter. The oath-taking process had faced multiple delays, leading to a political standoff between the Governor and the ruling party.
According to sources, Mamata decided to change her lawyer after her recent visit to Raj Bhavan, but no formal reason has been cited. The case is now expected to proceed under the legal representation of Fox & Mondal. With the affidavit already filed, the court’s next hearing is likely to determine the course of the proceedings. There have been no public statements from Mamata Banerjee, the Governor, or their legal teams regarding the latest developments.
